Rubber Chicken’s Dojo

i had a bit of a hiccup with wordpress last month. i tried to upgrade a plugin, don’t even remember which one now, but the browser crashed while it was activating. that meant it hadn’t finished and that affected the whole blog. i had to download the latest wordpress and put it back on the server, one file at a time. it didn’t take as long as i thought but finding the time to do it lately was an issue.

it’s all done now and that’s much better! now i can enjoy writing things that nobody reads.

i must admit i’ve been lazy with the personal blogging. but with a heavy schedule and no time for rest, by the time i sit in front of the computer with any inkling of an idea, the will to type is lost. i’m also torn professionally too; like typing anything about school. i know i don’t mention names but if i say anything untoward about work, and it gets back to superiors, then it’s my arse. the dojo has degenerated into a sheffield wednesday/sharks/picture blog. and to me, that sux ass…

once again, my choice of movie has not let me down.  first, the wrestler, now, watchmen. based on alan moore’s limited series from 1986-87, this movie is ultra violent, ultra slick and ultra cool. this isn’t the cartoon fluff of spider-man, nor the gritty melodrama of the batman series. as inyoung pointed out, it depicts how the world would more likely be if  ’superheroes’ were around. paranoid, hunted and lonely, with their own agendas and troubles. there are some excellent sequences throughout the movie, great special effects, decent writing and good characters. if only there was a way to watch it in a cinema without dickheads who talk all the way through.

the sheffield wednesday posts in a row. i have no life…

i can easily count the number of modern authors i like reading and would actually sit and read more than one of their books, on about three fingers. conn iggulden would be one of those three and this week i sat down and powered through his third book in the conqueror series, bones of the hills. the final installment tells of the mongols’ battle with the arab nations which ultimately led to genghis khan’s demise.

i think the thing i like most about, not just this book, but the series in general, is the way it combines two of my favourite pieces of work: homer’s, the odyssey and the romance of the three kingdoms, attributed to luo guanzhong. the emotional connection felt for the characters (homer) mixed and balanced almost perfectly with the action and strategies (luo). the fact the iggulden also tries to be as historically accurate as possible is also good. i might even have a crack at some of iggulden’s earlier works on julius caesar.

i just remembered about my shots from canberra. so i’ve put them in the evidence section in the canberra/sydney 08 album. there’s not many in there but as i sift through the ones with no students and aren’t shit (not going to end up with many), i’ll add them. i’m also adding some ones to Trek Earth and Australian albums, just to keep up to date a bit better.

and speaking of stumbling, i also found a nifty site that has streaming tv shows, movies, anime and cartoons. i’m currently watching the first series of entourage and might give tropic thunder or hancock a whirl later on. go check out live cinema online.

i have to admit that i don’t know much about flash but i stumbled upon this page describing the levels of buddhism. it has some cool interactive bits. i don’t have any use for that kind of page but it’s nice to have something other than the old menu/link type set up. and so saying, here’s a link…
