sheffield wednesday never looked to be in trouble as they cruised to a 2 – 0 victory over coventry city at hillsborough overnight. the game was effectively over after 20 minutes as darren purse and leon clarke both scored.
wednesday were steady from the outset, purse scored off a well-timed header from an in-swinging corner after just four minutes. there were few chances in the opening stages, with neither team able to make anything of their forays into the final third.
however, the owls doubled their lead from the penalty spot after twenty minutes. wednesday midfielder, james o’connor, was brought down by city’s elliott ward. clarke stepped up and neatly dispatched the penalty.
the following hours saw few chances. city tried to come back but spurned some decent chances. wednesday, while not trying to defend per se, failed to muster more opportunities for themselves.
the win sees the owls and the sky blues swap places on the table. sheffield wednesday are back to 13th place.
