i found a cool site while bumbling around and generally procrastinating. it’s a neat idea for flash and uses photos to create mosaics which can be zoomed in to find photos that match that part of the picture made up of a lot more photos. the photos seem to be stock footage but it’s a very neat idea and works really well. check it out.
i was surprised this evening as i checked out a couple of news sites. yahoo news lead with a story about countries and their happiness to life expectancy to environmental impact ratios. nine of the top ten countries were in latin america. no really big surprise there. eco tourism is quite popular there. australia came in third! i’m guessing that’s mainly due to the fact that we are a large country with a very small population.
on the flipside, bbc lead with a very different story of violent protests in its north-west uighur region. up to 140 people have been reportedly killed by chinese police as they ‘deomstrated peacefully’. at the moment there is no information coming out of the region. as the story says, the government has closed down twitter and other discussion boards, in order to avoid an iran-style online collusion effect.
while the chinese story is very sad, especially if true, it made me shake my head in the way that the media prioritises its stories, particularly that of the american market. while it is on the front page now, the china story did not appear on yahoo for many many hours, while the bbc version has been up since this afternoon.

australia scaled to new heights in the latest fifa world rankings released this week. the socceroos have climbed to their highest ever ranking of 16th (!!!) thanks mainly to their stellar display during their successful world cup qualifying campaign. playing a lot more competitive matches against higher quality opponents certainly helps as well.
brasil retale the number one spot, followed by european champs, spain. the switch comes as the samaba kings took out the confederations cup last week.
