taking its toll
taking-its-toll

i haven’t even started the season yet and the injury toll is rising. they’re only niggling injuries at the moment but it could no doubt get worse soon. i’ve hyperextended my right ankle, had the old knee problems flare up and now my achilles is swollen and i took a kick to my left elbow on tuesday night, resulting in some quality swelling, bruising and numbness in my left ring and little fingers. i’d say “ow!” but i can’t feel it…

sheffield-wednesday-2-crystal-palace-0

sheffield wednesday ended a short run of two losses to beat crystal palace overnight. two late goals from sean mcallister and leon clarke got something for the owls in what was otherwise an unexciting midtable clash. the win means wednesday move up to 12th but still behind the teams around them in terms of games in hand. at least relegation isn’t a problem…

sheffield-wednesday-0-barnsley-1

once again, sheffield wednesday sucked it hard midweek, losing yet another derby 1-0, this time to barnsley. if i could get past the hopelessness that is this team, i would bother to look for more in-depth analysis, but it’s no longer worth it. the owls now sit in 13th, up to two games ahead of those teams around them. they play crystal palace this weekend. palace have three games in hand compared to wednesday.

sheffield-wednesday-0-doncaster-rovers-1

sheffield wednesday stumbled into a red-hot doncaster rovers side in the south yorkshire derby overnight. Rovers have won three straight games going into this contest and they played all over the owls as they took over the first half.irish international, paul heffernan, giving the rovers a lead on the half hour with a well-timed header.  their dominant display continued well into the second half before wednesday could launch any kind of offensive. even then, it couldn’t be finished well, tudgay hitting the crossbar from a centring pass from jermaine johnson.

the win leaves wednesday in 12th place. the owls are the only team in the top half ot the table with a negative goal differential, a whopping -10. defense seems to be optional this season…

belated-update-australia-0-japan-0

the socceroos travelled to yokohama midweek and drew in a scoreless draw with japan in their group 1 world cup qualifier. the aussies never really pressed their hosts in attack while japan hardly looked like scoring with an impotent, aimless strike force. australia played a lone striker up front, tim cahill, with josh kennedy and mark viduka injured. cahill struggled a little but scott mcdonald was not used as an option by coach, pim verbeek. the draw maintains australia’s two point lead at the head of the group. three of the four reminaing games are at home, giving the socceroos an excellent chance to qualify for south africa 2010.

corp

on a cool, damp friday night, inyoung and i headed out to suncorp stadium to watch the second leg of the a-league preliminary semi-final between the queensland roar and central coast mariners. right from the start, the roar dominated play, their pace and passing slicing the mariners apart time and again. matt nichols scored a deflected goal after about 20 minutes to put the queenslanders up 1-0. just after half time, marco murdocca clinically finished a swift move to give the hosts a two goal advantage. a mariners goal on 70 minutes kept the game interesting but not enough from keeping inyoung and i there until the end.

the above photo was taken with my fisheye lens. i was looking for some interesting angles but the rain was making it a bit tricky. still happy with the result though. both game and shot…

victorian-bushfires

after sweltering in a two week heatwave over the last fortnight, victoria has lit up like a tinderbox with bushfires ravaging the northern part of the state. so far, 173 known fatalities have been counted and the work is not done yet. as much as the local media has saturated and wrung the story to the ground, the boston globe has done a photo editorial on the tragedy in its big picture photo series. well worth a look…
