this movie is so good, i’m going to add a second picture later. the wrestler stars mickey rourke as has-been wrestler, randy “the ram” robinson, a one-time champion in the eighties, whose broken, battered body is still taking punishment 20 years after his fame extinguished. it depicts his struggle through everyday life, from his estranged daughter to the shame, for him, of working in a supermarket to make the rent for his trailer.
randy still wrestles on the independent circuit, basking in the diminishing cheers of small crowds. he suffers a heart attack after one bout and is told he should never wrestle again. there are truly poignant moments in the film; like during the autograph day, as randy looks around at the battered remains of his friends and colleagues, wheelchair bound, lame and even one with a colostomy bag. he shakes his head, not out of pity but out of determination to not turn out like that.
randy’s relationship with stripper-come-mother, pam, played by marisa tomei, helps anchor him and gives him some glimmer of hope of leaving the world of wrestling behind. as randy decides to have one last match, against doctor’s orders, he comes to terms with his own place in his world and that of those around him. it’s truly a great movie, the best one i have seen in a long time. tomei gets her kit off too, which is still hot, considering she’s 44. here’s a pic anyway:

overall, the movie is well-paced, with some excellent dialogue. rourke spends long periods by himself onscreen and he gives a great performance. it’s no wonder he received a golden globe award. the daily struggles that randy goes through must be reflected by real ex-wrestlers everyday as they try to scratch out a living after the lights have faded. this one might even be worth a second viewing. and no, not just for tomei’s tits…
