sheffield-wednesday-1-nottingham-forest-2

a ten-man sheffield wednesday could not hold onto an early lead, going down to goals in both halves to a more desperate nittingham forest overnight. jermaine johnson opened the scoring after half an hour, prodding home a corner at the far post. forest levelled a few minutes later. the turning point came when, just before the break, francis jeffers was sent from the field after a clumsy challenge, earning a straight red card. wednesday pushed forward despite the setback but could not find a way through.

the loss drops wednesday down to 13th.

first day
first-day

the first day of school has come and gone. this is going to be a really long year. it’s always the minority that spoil it for the majority and that’s no different with my class. they seem pretty intent on pissing me off. the rest of the class are fine, with some really nice kids who will miss out as the little shits are managed. i am going to make sure they don’t miss out.

mickey rourke

this movie is so good, i’m going to add a second picture later. the wrestler stars mickey rourke as has-been wrestler, randy “the ram” robinson, a one-time champion in the eighties, whose broken, battered body is still taking punishment 20 years after his fame extinguished. it depicts his struggle through everyday life, from his estranged daughter to the shame, for him, of working in a supermarket to make the rent for his trailer.

randy still wrestles on the independent circuit, basking in the diminishing cheers of small crowds. he suffers a heart attack after one bout and is told he should never wrestle again. there are truly poignant moments in the film; like during the autograph day, as randy looks around at the battered remains of his friends and colleagues, wheelchair bound, lame and even one with a colostomy bag. he shakes his head, not out of pity but out of determination to not turn out like that.

randy’s relationship with stripper-come-mother, pam, played by marisa tomei, helps anchor him and gives him some glimmer of hope of leaving the world of wrestling behind. as randy decides to have one last match, against doctor’s orders, he comes to terms with his own place in his world and that of those around him. it’s truly a great movie, the best one i have seen in a long time. tomei gets her kit off too, which is still hot, considering she’s 44. here’s a pic anyway:

tomei with kit

overall, the movie is well-paced, with some excellent dialogue. rourke spends long periods by himself onscreen and he gives a great performance. it’s no wonder he received a golden globe award. the daily struggles that randy goes through must be reflected by real ex-wrestlers everyday as they try to scratch out a living after the lights have faded. this one might even be worth a second viewing. and no, not just for tomei’s tits…

happy oz day
happy-oz-day

another australia day has come and gone. mick dodson, an aboriginal rights activist and lawyer was named australian of the year. he was the first indigenous australian to be admitted into monash university to study law and has been crusading for the rights of his people for about three decades. he’s proposed that australia day be moved to accomodate the feelings of the indigenous population. i say give the indigenous population their own day of celebration, like may 3rd, when they were given the right to vote. that’d give us another day off. sweet…

anyway, inyoung and i were at southbank and ran into some local celebrations. there were bands and performers in the piazza and shit going on all around the place. we checked some of it out before heading inside for some coolness. kings of leon got #1 in the triple j hottest 100 as well. guess that means something to someone…

underworld3pic4

i gave inyoung one more chance after the twilight debacle and this is what she comes up with, underworld: rise of the lycans. having seen the first two movies, storied on the the war between vampires and werewolves, i will admit i did have some medium-high expectations about the film. next time, i’ll lower my sights a bit. i’m not saying it’s a terrible movie. the costumes and sets and action are pretty bad-ass. it’s just the acting and story itself could have done with another couple of rewrites. bill nighy is good as victor, the head vampire, but i have rarely seen a poor performance by him. michael sheen as the head lycan, lucian, is passable but he was better in the previous films. rhona mitra (above) plays lucian’s vampire love-interest, sonya. she provides the eye candy and pouty lips. also passable.

there were some questions that i kept asking myself, like: why didn’t the werewolves, some of whom were wolves permanently, attack the vamps during the day when they were sleeping? who was the michael clarke duncan clone that made everyone laugh when he talked? where was the female frontal nudity? how did victor survive? what was up with the selene (kate beckinsale) cameo at the end, another movie coming?

it was bloody hot outside so the aircon provided a brief respite. popcorn was chewy but nice and the pepsi was refreshing. southbank cinemas do it again. tomorrow, i’m seeing a movie of my choice. should be good.

Man walks into his bedroom with a sheep under his arm. His wife is lying in bed reading. Man says, “This is the pig I have sex with when you’ve got a headache.” Wife replies, “I think you’ll find that is a sheep.” Man replies, “I think you’ll find I was talking to the sheep.”

fantomas2

sanks, simons and i headed to the tivoli in the valley last night for a double dose of fantomas and serj tankian, ex-frontman for system of a down. i’d seen fantomas before but i never pass up an opportunity to see one of my idols from my music-loving past. i was glad i went because the set they did was completely different to the set they did a couple of years ago. last night they did a lot of stuff from their movie soundtrack album, director’s cut, and even a couple of parts of delirium cordia. dressed in cricket whites, they even stopped a couple of songs before the end and sang “take me out to the ballgame”, upon which patton asked, “do you guys sings that at cricket games?” “hello no!” came the reply.

time for serj and to be honest, the show itself was pretty weak. the music was good and loud and rocking but serj pulled a few poses while his band made some of their own. i’m pretty sure they may have been the children from bruce springsteen’s backup band. 80’s moves abound. fantomas blew them away with a tight set. i’ll cut serj some slack though, he’s only been doing this for about a year in this format, fantomas have been going for nigh on a decade. good night all-round.

sheffield-wednesday-4-charlton-athletic-1

sheffield wednesday had their biggest win since opening day as they pummelled hapless charlton at hillsborough overnight. the addicks have not won since october 18, leaving them at the foot of the championship table and wednesday made full use of their hopelessness, inflicting early damage with good possession and shots.

on-loan midfielder, darren potter, netted after 16 minutes, with francis jeffers and a marcus tudgay brace rounding out the scorers. potter’s goal was his first for the owls while jeffers’ goal was his first since new year’s day 2008. tudgay’s second goal was an injury time penalty after charlton had scored a consolation goal.

the win puts wednesday in 12th, the first time they have been in the top half for about a month.
