i just remembered about my shots from canberra. so i’ve put them in the evidence section in the canberra/sydney 08 album. there’s not many in there but as i sift through the ones with no students and aren’t shit (not going to end up with many), i’ll add them. i’m also adding some ones to Trek Earth and Australian albums, just to keep up to date a bit better.

aussies-smash-qatar

the socceroos put on a superlative performance last night to go top of their world cup group after a thumping 4-0 victory over qatar in brisbane overnight. a huge lightning storm about an hour before the match meant that the game was close to being abandoned, sbs’ philip micallef calling the pitch, a quagmire. i would hardly have called it that. with the heavy rollers, the worst it was would have been was waterlogged. suncorp stadium has one of the best drainage systems in the country. the only time the water became a problem was in the opening minutes. however, as the rain eased with about ten minutes to kickoff, there wasn’t really any problem. the aussies looked a class above, retaining possession for long periods and making the qataris chase the game, which they didn’t do very well. tim cahill opened the scoring after a neat build up in the 7th minute. brett emerton scored twice and josh kennedy had a great game, capping it off with a neat header 20 minutes from time. inyoung and i got stuck at roma street station as the rain just bucketed down, the thunder crashed and the lightning split the sky with white-hot scars. we came very close to going home, but we decided that we’ll at least go and have a look. lucky we did. the seats we had we protected by the stadium terrace and we hardly got wet at all. we left with about 10 minutes remaining to beat the traffic. glad we did that too. easy passage home. a crowd of a little more than 34,000 braved the elements. about 20,000 short of capacity but it was to be expected with the storm front blowing through. here are some shots:

is it wrong…
is-it-wrong

…to hate yobbos? i guess some who hear that might label me elitist or a snob. but i really don’t think it’s too much for people, especially when out in public, to adhere to common sense and decency. their nasal babble and high-pitched profanities just annoy the shit out of me. racist slurs against people who they have nothing to do with makes me feel bad to be an australian. many people would point and say, “well, what are they teaching them at school?” but school shouldn’t be the place where they learn manners and good behaviour. that should be coming from home. and then, to top it off, tomfoolery in the bus (by the same dickheads). one was heard to say, “well if you fucking don’t like what we’re doing, move to the front of the fucking bus!” er… i was at the front of the bus and i still heard that stuff. sometimes random acts of violence just don’t seem worth it…

fear-and-self-loathing-and-brisvegas

i’ve been doing this ict license for school for the last two months. it does not make me any more qualified as a teacher but it does mean that the school gets more funding, which seems pretty stupid if i’m only a contract teacher who probably won’t even be there next year. anyway, a part of it is writing a belief statement about what you believe as a teacher and how ict affects learning, from your perspective. it got me thinking, nay, worrying, about what the hell i actually belief in as a teacher, what teaching theories i follow and what the fuck it all means. i drew a blank, a zero, nada, nothing. so while i was procrastinating and thinking about what the hell it all means, i stumbled upon this. in my years of studying psychology i was never one to buy into the pop-psychology gimmick. but after reading this, the impostor phenomenon, certainly strikes a chord. what if? what if i’m not actually cut out to be a teacher and i’m just turning up to school everyday and fucking around with these kids and not actually teaching them anything? what if i’m just posing as an educator and reinforcing the shitty institution of learning that the queensland government has built up over the last 70 years? what if i’m just adding to the list of shoddy teachers that clog the system and don’t allow really good teachers to shine? what if i’m just overreacting? this is what procrastination leads to…

yesterday being the second last day of the school holidays, inyoung and i headed to runcorn for what we thought was going to be a korean festival. we saw some pamphlets for it and it mentioned food and traditional korean dancers/musicians (sa mul nor ee). so we found our way there and had a look around. not many australians, 90% koreans, some peddling food and/or chinese medicine. seems like it was just meant to be a big korean cookup for the korean community. the esky full of cooked rice was a highlight! inyoung wasn’t really impressed with it. she is not a big fan of her own people for some reason. she can be quite jaded sometimes when it comes to talking about seeing koreans in australia. anyway, the photos i took were shit. i had a quick lesson from dave about light metering afterwards, which was useful.here’s a shot:

sens-start-new-season

the ottawa senators opened their new campaign on the road in stockholm, sweden against rivals, pittsburgh, early this morning. after being swept by the penguins last year in the playoffs, things were looking good when jason spezza put the sens up 3-2 at the end of the second period.

however, the sens could not hold on, allowing the tying goal early in the third. neither team could break through so the game went to overtime. a jason spezza turnover in the neutral zone gave the pens an odd-man rush and tyler kennedy slotted home the winning goal. pens win 4-3.  *sigh* here we go again…

quote of the day

(pittsburgh defender) hal gill, not the best fighter in the nhl. had five fights last year, lost six… that’s how bad he is.

run-comes-to-a-halt

sheffield wednesday’s unbeaten run of three games came to a screaming stop as they were hammered 4-0 at plymouth argyle overnight. the crowd at home park saw three goals in the first half an hour. owls defender, mark beevers, gifted plymouth an own goal before two more just before the half hour mark by paul gallagher and jamie mackie respectively, doused off any chance wednesday may have had. the loss slides the team down five places to 10th.
