inyoung and i spent some quality time yesterday watching the new movie, mongol. as a movie, it’s pretty good. fantastic cinematography, great cast and excellent plot. however, having read wolf of the plains, i was keen to see more of temujin’s struggle to survive growing up, which is part of the mystique and the myth of the man/khan he went on to become. the lack of continuity did frustrate me at times. for example, WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!! when he’s escaping from a rival tribe, they shoot him in the back with an arrow. he struggles on, gets home, mum and sibling run out. “oh no! my son has been shot!” cut to the next scene, he’s ok and back to full health! wtf??
it’s interesting reading the notes on the website. the director was talking about casting temujin and how he initially thought that some people might have been put off by a japanese actor playing the lead role. but as it turns out, most north east asian countries actually claim that temujin/genghis khan is actually one of their own. be it mongolia, korea or japan. they all lay claim. weird, yet kind of understandable. i’d want to claim a man who took over half the known world to be one of mine too. maybe he’s part aussie?

turkish goalkeeper, rustu recber, has announced his retirement from international football after turkey’s loss to germany in their semi-final at the the european championships. he had won 118 caps for his country and played an integral part of his country’s phenomenal run at the 2002 world cup.
however, he will be most remembered by me as the man dave and i heckled during the korea-turkey match in deagu in 2002. due to his uncanny likeness of the guy from the deuce bigolo movie, we kept on yelling out “hey fishy fishy fishy!” like his movie doppelganger. he will be missed… like a fish.

i have a week to go in this semester. i’m feeling pretty beat by it all. it’s been very full on and i’ve worked hard. i reckon i deserve a break for a couple of weeks.
on posse news, bec has made a move to the uk for at least six months. she’s going to go and wreak some havoc in the mother country and leave the pommies bemused and astounded in her wake. good luck, inda!
on the other side of the world, chuffy has gone back to canada for a couple of months to hang out and be cool with the folks. with a new contract to start, hopefully the batteries will be recharged for him too.
i’m really looking forward to these two weeks off, even though they are a week away. i’ve got some things cooking up and the time off will help me stew and finalise all the plans. everyone’s on holidays! haha, except for dave. unrucky, dave!

australia booked their way into the second round of world cup qualifying with a convincing 3-1 victory against qatar overnight. an emerton brace and a cool finish by captain harry kewell sealed the aussie’s passage into the next stage. in other results, iraq knocked out china, while lifting their own hopes of progressing, with a 2-1 win.
the next round sees two groups of five teams formed, with the top two from each group going through to the world cup, while the best third-placed team will play off against the top oceania team, probably new zealand.

i headed out for a while this afternoon and headed down to the annual bookfest; second-hand books soldĀ at cheap prices for charity. the aim was to get some more books for the lass to read during silent reading time, but, as usual, i got more myself. titles i got for myself included:
- merchant of venice – willy shakespeare
- robinson crusoe – dan defoe
- sadako and the thousand paper cranes – eleanor coerr
- the odyssey (proper version)
- tom sawyer – mark twain
- krakatoa
- the map that changed the world – both by simon winchester, same author that wrote korea.
other than the merchant of venice, i haven’t read any of the other books, so i’m looking forward to sitting down and getting some reading done. i’m currently getting through all quiet on the western front .
good day all-round!

a shambolic australian defense held out a lacklustre iraqi offense to win 1-0 at suncorp stadium this evening. i describe the two teams thus because as i sat there, amongst the 49,000 other people, i could not help but be amazed at how much room the aussies were giving the iraqis and how poorly the iraqis were converting their opportunities. an effective harry kewell, currently looking for a club, did his chances no harm with a fine performance. however, he was a rarity within a team of mediocrity as the big names, emerton, grella and even my main main, bresciano, struggled to find any form. here are some pics i took. keep in mind, these are from the nosebleeds way up the top…
